JACKET EDGE

DOMA F/W 2009
The jagged edges that form boundaries around our countries have been crossed, quiet fashionably too, by Argentine designer/artist Florencia Garnier. Her first collection of leather jackets for Buenos Aires based leather company DOMA are über-chic, fashioned with innovative design and fresh detailing making a DOMA leather jacket the “IT” jacket for style mavens worldwide.
FLORENCIA GARNIER's definition of style...
“Style for me is a way of living life, and this way defines all your choices, the places you go, the people you get in touch with, the way you dress, the things you like, and very important, the constant curiosity which moves your interior, and opens your mind and heart to go through new and exciting experiences.”
If style were...
An Object... It would be a book, but it would be many books, the books you’re reading, the books you have read and influenced you, and the books you would read and love.
A Moment... It would be that special moment where your body center vibrates, in a concert, in front of a picture or a painting, when you fall in love with a collection during the fashion weeks…! That moment when your heart runs quickly, your mind think in colors and movements, and that electricity goes from your feet up to your head!
A Person... It would be the person who generates you new curiosities, such as a friend, a boyfriend, an artist, a singer, Sartorialist people … In fashion I think of Anna Wintour, and of course Kate Moss, because of her high influences in trends.
A Place... Definitely Japan. There you have the interesting mix between orient and occident, with the spiritual view of Japanese culture, modern because of its knowledge of the past, which gives all things they do an aesthetical richness I really love.

DOMA SS 09
TERRA BLACK: How did you come to design such chic leather jackets?
Florencia Garnier: We always look for new ideas and enjoy making the new collections, and I speak in plural because this is a shared way of thinking “DOMA”, we are a team, with different areas but all connected. All of us look for the best new way to arrange chic and cool ideas, each one with our own knowledge, and the love and dedication we put in our work is reflected in the results.
TB: As DOMA’s designer, what are the key jackets/pieces every woman should have in their wardrobe?
FG: I think they should have a cute bomber jacket, and a biker jacket to wear perfectly with a minidress or jeans and you’re always good! Then the trench coat (we have a perfect one for next winter!), chic and modern. And finally a cropped jacket, with short length sleeves, to go to a party or special event.
TB: How would you describe your signature style?
FG: I have a vintage style which has to do with my childhood. I work a lot with my personal feelings and recollections: the places, colors, objects where I passed most of my time as a child, in my invented world, at grandma’s house. Then for DOMA I combine this personal world with trends I like for the brand and the result is what you see.
TB: What inspires your work/creations?
FG: What inspires me is a combination of my style which is a constant, with my permanent curiosity in other disciplines out of fashion design such as art, graphic design, industrial design, cinema, music, theatre, new movements, history, etc.
TB: Who are your design and style icons?
FG: My style icons vary, because I look for styles in the street when I travel to

DOMA FALL 09
TB: What DOMA jacket do you wear on a daily basis?
FG: I usually wear the one which appears in the summer campaign, a washed cow lavender biker jacket, perfectly wearable in any occasion – going out at night with a mini dress, or having lunch with friends with top and skinny jeans.
TB: Which is your favorite leather jacket that you have created and why?
FG: My favorite is the other one which appears in the (summer) campaign, a high bright black lamb leather bomber jacket with no collar, because you get different looks with it, and that’s what I always look for when I design each piece. I think it’s the perfect combination between design and urban look.
TB: Where are DOMA products currently stocked, where can your products be purchased? [SHOP DOMA HERE]
FG: You can find DOMA products all over the world, including the
TB: What else are you working on, any collaborations or special projects?
FG: I love to be in contact with art and design in many different aspects, so I design for another leather brand here in Argentina, I work for a theatre company as a vestuarist (wardrobe stylist) and set designer; and in time I’d like to collaborate with a tendance (trend) team, creating trends reports because I love to think and detect new tendencies, and work with that. Also, I’m beginning to paint, working with illustrations I’ve made and textile art, looking to express myself in a sensible way to canalize the energy I have. TB
