International Elemental Soma Month: A Month of Embodied Remembrance

Each August, an invitation to return to the body—not as something to improve, but as a place to inhabit.

There are many ways we are taught to approach the body.

We train it.

Feed it.

Dress it.

Evaluate it.

Heal it.

Improve it.

And sometimes, in the midst of all this attention to the body, we forget something remarkably simple:

We live here.

The body is not merely something we carry through our lives. It is where life is experienced.

The warmth of sunlight against the skin.

The sensation of water moving down the throat.

The expansion of the lungs with an inhale.

The feeling of our feet meeting the earth.

The subtle awareness that tells us when something feels near, distant, welcome, or unfamiliar.

Long before we explain an experience, the body is already in relationship with it.

International Elemental Soma Month (IESM) was created as an annual invitation to remember this.

Held throughout August, IESM is a month devoted to embodied presence, elemental awareness, ritual, and the simple practice of returning to the body we already inhabit.

For 2026, our inaugural theme is:

The House of Remembrance

Where the Body Remembers Itself as Home.

What Does It Mean to Remember the Body?

Remembrance, within The Elemental Soma, is not about retrieving something we have forgotten intellectually.

It is not information.

It is recognition.

There are things the body already knows without our needing to explain them.

How to breathe.

How to sense.

How to respond to touch.

How to receive water.

How to orient toward warmth.

How to settle when support is felt.

Throughout International Elemental Soma Month, we explore this intelligence through simple embodied rituals.

Not so that ordinary life becomes more elaborate.

But so that we become more available to the life already occurring within it.

A skincare ritual can become an opportunity to notice touch.

A sip of water can become an experience of receiving.

Fragrance can return our awareness to breath.

Applying body butter can become a moment of contact with the body rather than another task performed upon it.

A candle can mark the transition from doing to being.

Nothing extraordinary needs to happen.

The noticing is the ritual.

The House of Remembrance

The House of Remembrance is not a physical house.

It is the body.

Throughout August, we enter this house through four simple movements:

Notice.
Receive.
Breathe.
Belong.

Each week offers a different doorway.

Week One — Skin Ritual | FieldBody

We begin at the place where the body meets the world.

Through skin and touch, we explore contact, sensation, and presence.

Rather than approaching skincare through appearance or correction, we allow application to become attention.

The invitation is simple:

Notice.

Week Two — Water Ritual | WaterBody

We turn toward one of the body's most fundamental relationships: water.

Through the simple act of drinking, we explore receiving—not as an idea, but as a physical experience.

A vessel.

A sip.

A pause.

Receive.

Week Three — Scent Ritual | BreathBody

We return to the breath.

Scent becomes a quiet companion to awareness, offering another way to notice the continuous rhythm already moving through us.

Nothing needs to be controlled.

Nothing needs to be perfected.

Breathe.

Week Four — Body Ritual | EarthBody

Finally, we return to the body as ground.

Through slow, intentional touch, we explore the possibility that embodiment is not somewhere we eventually arrive.

We are already here.

Belong.

Together, these four movements create the quiet arc of the month:

Notice → Receive → Breathe → Belong

Not a progression toward a better Self.

A deepening relationship with the Self already present.

Ritual as a Way of Returning

Ritual is central to International Elemental Soma Month, but perhaps not in the way we usually imagine ritual.

A ritual does not require elaborate objects.

It does not require perfect surroundings.

It does not require belief.

The objects we use—a candle, water, serum, fragrance—are companions.

They help us mark a moment.

But they do not create the ritual.

Presence does.

This became one of the most important principles of The House of Remembrance:

The ritual is complete because of your presence, not because of any particular object.

You can participate with the House of Earth + Aether ceremonial companions.

You can participate with objects already in your home.

You can participate with nothing but your hands, your breath, and your willingness to notice.

The invitation remains the same.

Come as you are.

Three Ceremonies, One Movement

Three complimentary ceremonies hold the month.

We begin with The Threshold Ritual.

A threshold is the space between what has been and what comes next. Rather than rushing across it, we spend time there.

We notice who has arrived.

We light the Ritual Flame.

And we ask not:

Who do I want to become?

But:

How do I wish to arrive?

The flame remains a companion throughout the month, lit again during our weekly rituals as a simple marker of transition:

from doing to being,

from moving to noticing,

from the day to this moment.

Then, on August 8, we pause.

And at the end of the month, we remember.

August 8: International Elemental Soma Day

At the heart of International Elemental Soma Month is International Elemental Soma Day (IESD), observed annually on 8.8 — August 8.

For 2026, we gather for:

The Aether Pause

A Ritual of Coherence

If the rest of the month gently invites us into relationship with the body, 8.8 asks even less.

It asks us to pause.

There is no lesson to master.

No intention to manifest.

No breakthrough to seek.

No experience we are supposed to have.

We gather.

We breathe.

We receive Reiki.

We allow ourselves, for a little while, to stop reaching for the next thing.

There is something quietly radical about that.

We live in a culture that often treats stillness as preparation for productivity. We rest so that we can return refreshed. We meditate so that we can focus better. We care for ourselves so that we can continue doing.

But what if the pause does not need to earn its place?

What if presence is sufficient unto itself?

That is the invitation of The Aether Pause.

Nothing is required. Presence is enough.

And Then, We Carry It With Us

International Elemental Soma Month concludes with The Remembrance Ritual.

We light the Ritual Flame one final time.

We revisit the simple experiences that have accompanied us:

Touch.

Water.

Scent.

Breath.

Body.

And then we extinguish the flame.

Not because the light has disappeared.

But because ritual was never meant to remain confined to the candle, the ceremony, or the month.

The practice continues when we feel water against our skin.

When we notice ourselves breathing.

When our hands meet our body with tenderness.

When we recognize the ground beneath our feet.

When, in the middle of an ordinary day, we suddenly realize:

I am here.

That may be the deepest remembrance of all.

An Invitation to Inhabit

The Elemental Soma does not ask us to transcend the body.

It asks us to become more available to it.

International Elemental Soma Month is an extension of that invitation.

For one month each year, we intentionally return to the elemental experiences that are already woven through our days.

We notice.

We receive.

We breathe.

We belong.

And perhaps, somewhere within these very ordinary acts, we discover that coming home was never about finding our way somewhere else.

We were already standing inside the house.

Welcome to The House of Remembrance.
